The Minister Aníbal Fernández, along with a delegation from the Ministry of Security, visited Brussels to strengthen cooperation with the EU in the fight against organized crime

Brussels, 29th September 2023 - The Minister of Security of the Republic of Argentina, Aníbal Fernández, led a delegation composed of Mrs. María Celeste Braga Beatove, Secretary of International Cooperation, and Commissioner General Juan Carlos Hernández, Chief of the Argentine Federal Police.

Together with officials from the Argentine Embassy to the European Union, in a joint effort to consolidate bilateral cooperation on security and the fight against organized crime, they participated in the Ministerial Summit between the Latin American Committee on Internal Security (CLASI) and the Ministers of Interior of the European Union, held in Brussels from the 27th September to the 29th September 2023, in which the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, was also present.

The Latin American Committee on Internal Security (CLASI) is a regional organization that promotes cooperation and the exchange of information among Latin American countries on issues related to internal security and the fight against organized crime. On the other hand, the Ministry of Security of the Republic of Argentina is the entity responsible for formulating and implementing policies and strategies to ensure public safety, promote crime prevention, and combat organized crime in the country.

During the Summit, Minister Aníbal Fernández reaffirmed the commitment of the Republic of Argentina to strengthen cooperation with the European Union on matters related to internal security and the fight against organized crime. This meeting provided a strategic platform for discussing joint strategies to address the transnational challenges posed by organized crime today.

Minister Fernández emphasized the importance of working in a coordinated and collaborative manner in the prevention and combat of organized crime, highlighting the need to share information, experiences, and best practices among Latin American and European nations. He also underscored the relevance of promoting policies that comprehensively address the security and well-being of citizens, alongside the fight against crime.

As a result of the Summit, a cooperation agreement was signed in Brussels, Belgium, between the European Union and the Latin American Committee on Internal Security, setting a comprehensive agenda for the fight against drug trafficking and other transnational crimes. The goal is to establish a mechanism that allows for the identification of points of convergence between the security agendas of the countries, in order to find joint solutions. The aim is to professionalize international cooperation to strengthen the security of both regions of the world.

In this context, Minister Aníbal Fernández also held bilateral meetings with members of EUROJUST, EUROPOL, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Training (CEPOL), Spain, Belgium, Colombia, and the Directorate-General for International Associations of the European Union (INTPA) of the European Commission.
