Argentina achieves the reopening of the poultry meat market for the European Union

Brussels, 29th August 2023 - Starting from August 30, 2023, exports of poultry meat from Argentina to the European Union will resume, following their suspension since February due to the detection of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak.

Argentina has succeeded in convincing the European Union to reopen its market for poultry meat, a decision that reflects the collaborative efforts of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, and the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (SENASA) to regain a crucial destination for our exports.

Since the detection, Argentina implemented a series of measures to regain the status of an HPAI-free country, which allowed for the control of the disease and its spread. These measures included a policy of sanitary culling, cleaning and disinfection actions in affected establishments, and a surveillance program to demonstrate the absence of infection. Thanks to joint efforts by Argentine authorities and the poultry production sector, all HPAI outbreaks in poultry within the national territory were successfully contained.

Following the declaration of Argentina as an HPAI-free country on August 7, communicated to the European Commission, and as a result of the efforts made by the Argentine Embassy to the EU, along with the Agricultural Attaché, the EU made a swift decision, published today through Regulation (EU) 2023/1664, allowing Argentine poultry meat and poultry products to re-enter the European market.

This decision will enable our producers to regain an export market that amounted to 7.8 million euros in 2022, marking a 100% increase compared to 2021.
