Seville, 8th November 2023 - The National Commission on Space Activities of Argentina (CONAE) has strengthened its ties of international collaboration by signing an agreement with the European Commission, the governing body of the European Union. This agreement, signed in Seville, Spain, on Tuesday, November 7, during the Space Week of Seville, aims primarily at the exchange of satellite data within the framework of the Copernicus Earth observation program.
The agreement was signed by Raúl Kulichevsky, Executive and Technical Director of CONAE, and Timo Pesonen, Director-General of Defense, Industry, and Space at the European Commission. Marcelo Colazo, Manager of Technological Linkage at CONAE, was also present at the ceremony, along with officials from the European Commission.
"The signing of this agreement between CONAE and the European Union for the Copernicus program will allow us to continue growing in collaboration between the parties and, moreover, to have access to data that will enable us to keep working towards providing more and better information and solutions to our society through the use of space technology," expressed Kulichevsky after the signing of the agreement.
Through this institutional collaboration, CONAE will have direct access to information from the Sentinel satellites of the Copernicus program, facilitating the exchange of Earth observation data between Europe and Argentina. In return, Argentina will contribute with data from in situ measurement networks with ground sensors and satellite missions of CONAE, such as SABIA-Mar, in an open data policy. The ultimate goal is to promote cooperation and stimulate the exchange in the field of Earth observation.
The Copernicus program, known for offering various satellite applications, supports forecasting, management, and mitigation of natural disasters, as well as land, oceanic, and atmospheric monitoring, among others. Argentina's participation is particularly noteworthy due to the observation capabilities of the SAOCOM radars and the information provided by the SABIA-Mar mission on coastal areas.
The Argentine Embassy to the European Union celebrates this milestone in space cooperation and reaffirms its commitment to continue deepening various areas of rapprochement between Argentina and the European Union.
