Presentation of the book "European Citizenship from the Diasporas"

Brussels, 27th June 2023 - Within the current debate on the Migration Pact in the EU, Ambassador Berardi participated in the launch of the book "European Citizenship from the Diasporas," which explores the construction of European citizenship. The event took place alongside Members of the European Parliament Mónica Silvana González and Juan Fernando López Aguilar.

This collective work, coordinated by Mónica González, gathers the opinions of political figures and references from civil society and academia on integral aspects that affect migratory processes. It covers citizenship, employment, education, law, and integration into the social fabric.

The book draws from the debates held within the framework of the Conference on Europe and also provides the perspective of communities with a migrant origin regarding the construction of European citizenship.

During the book presentation, concepts such as the segmentation of migration were further explored, where migrants often find themselves integrating into the lowest social sectors or those with lower qualifications in the labor force. Different political discourses on migration were highlighted, including the paradox of the EU transitioning from being an exporter of immigration in the past century to being an importer of immigration today.

Thus, the book presentation itself converged with its own objective as a work: to invite reflection on the fundamental role played by migration from various origins in shaping and consolidating rights and freedoms in today's Europe and in the Europe of the future.
